Your back in action
I am the consultant to the second NHS clinical trial (ASPEN) http://eprints.soton.ac.uk/369956/examining the effective number of lessons that will help low back pain. I headed the teaching team and advised on all aspects of delivery of the lessons. (2012-2013). There is currently another trial in the pipeline (2019) so watch this space. ** on hold because of COVID**…
2008: A Clinical trial showed that 24 lessons in the Alexander Technique reduces back pain from 21 days a month in pain to just 3 days. Visit the British Medical Journal website to read the research here. The pilot study of the back pain trial was run here in Brighton and I headed the team of teachers and acted as a consultant to the trial organisers. There is currently a second trial in pilot phase (2014)
If you are a back pain sufferer, come for an introductory lesson to find out how I can help you. I offer a course of 24 lessons specially designed for back pain sufferers. This is based on the clinical trail results. Initially you may need to come twice a week to get those bad postural habits sorted out. As a nation of back pain sufferers we could do with knowing more about the Alexander Technique.
It’s not relaxation therapy although it is relaxing and energising, in fact it’s not a therapy at all but more of a re-education. It is not posture control either; many people get the idea that it is about getting in the right position or sitting up straight. It isn’t at all. However most people will enjoy improved posture. I do not diagnose disease, my expertise is in the use of the body as a whole. I teach people to become more aware of how they use themselves in everyday activities. It can help to improve your breathing, circulation, muscle tension, balance and co-ordination and help you stay calmer and think on your feet.
COVID UPDATE. I am currently teaching online!
